Echinacea is a plant native to North America. It used by Native American to treat cold symptom and tooth ache. The polysaccharides in Echinacea can produce substances which bind to the sites on cells and block the binding of virus and bacteria toxins. Echinacea can stimulate the immune system to produce more natural killer cells and macrophages to kill cancer cells. There is a protein called MHC I on the cell surface. It is used to mark the cancer cells and the natural killer cells will recognize them and phagocytize them. These cells are the processors of the macrophages. When they enter lymph system and lungs and liver, they are turned to macrophages. They can not only recognize tumor cells, but also pass the information to lymphocytes and induce the adaptive immunity.
In addition, Echinacea can produce interferon which will destroy the genetic materials in tumor cells and increase their adhesion ability and thus reduce their metastasis and reproduction.
Inulin: functioning by increasing the number of granulocytes and leukocytes.
Polysaccharides: the hydrocarbon receptor on the surface of T lymphocytes and macrophages can stimulate the immune system, enhance the phagocytic capacity and destroy tumor cells. It can also enhance the activity of non-specific T cells, produce interferon and release more lymphocytes.
It can suppress hyaluronidase, stimulate the growth of fibroblasts and the synthesis of glucosamine enzyme, produce cortical ketone effect and promote the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormones.
Echinacea glycosides and caffeic acid derivatives have anti-bacterial effects.
It can inhibit influenza, herpes and other virus, and block the receptors on the surface of virus.
